Alcudia - Mallorca Island Map 9.2
The Port of Alcudia, two kilometres from the town of Alcudia, has grown considerably over recent decades. Until the mid sixties it was a small harbour with one storey houses. It has since grown so much in developed land, number of inhabitants and tourist capacity that it is one of the most important holiday centres on Mallorca.
There are few signs of the old town. Large hotels have become the norm and take up practically all the coast along to the municipal area of Muro. The old quarter lies around the Comandancia de Marina, near the fishermen's quay.
Port Alcudia combines such different activities as industry and tourism. The commercial port is the second in importance on Mallorca, after Palma. There is a ferry that sails from Alcudia daily to Ciutadella. It is possible to make a return trip to Menorca in a single day. During the summer months this is a short, relaxing journey; in winter, bad weather can lengthen the time as there are commonly strong currents in the Menorcan channel. Tourist boats also head out from the Port and tour the bay of Pollença as far as Formentor.
There are numerous bars, restaurants and shops along the seafront. There are many types of cuisine, especially international cuisine, though there are also Chinese and Hindu restaurants, pizza parlours, and hamburger bars. Along the promenade, near the Club Náutico, there are many street cafes.
