Colònia de Sant Jordi - Mallorca Island Map 7.13
Na Guardia and other islets near the coast form a natural barrier, keeping the sand clean and the sea bottom of es Dolç, clean. At the same time, it checks the winds that can make bathing difficult. Es Dolç, is one of the two unspoilt beaches nearest Colonia de Sant Jordi. It can be reached on foot from the harbour along a path around the rocks or along the private pathway of sa Vall, open only to residents in ses Salines or the Colonia de Sant Jordi. The latter is a summer resort, but is active all year round. Many residents in Palma and those from surrounding villages come here at weekends.
In Colonia Sant Jordi there are several restaurants specialising in fish dishes. It is also a popular centre for its night life. From Colonia de Sant Jordi it is possible to walk to ses Salines which takes its name from the salt mines which date back to Roman times. This resort was largely built on a saline stretch of land and nearby are the only two salt mines still operating in Mallorca. They meet the needs of local industries and small scale consumption. The salt industry is one of the oldest on the island. Salt has been mined in different areas of the island for over two thousand years. Under Roman rule salt was mined in different swampy areas.
