Es Trenc - Mallorca Island Map 7.12

Es Trenc, Mallorca, Spain

Today, Es Trenc is the only remaining large beach on Majorca not to have been developed. It still has a system of dunes that separate the beach from the adjacent, saline stretch of land and farm land.

The controversy surrounding the development of this natural area led to the beach becoming so popular, and it is now one of the most frequented un spoilt areas. The beach now forms part of a protected area covering 1,492 hectares and known as es Trenc and es Salobrar de Campos.

In this natural area we can see the four main types of land: ground cover, saline area, shifting dunes and agricultural land. The wetland behind the beach is rich in aquatic bird-life. Scientists have counted as many as 171 different species including both migratory and sedentary birds.

On this beach, the remains of a fourth century BC Punic settlement have been found. Together with the one found on the islet of na Guardia, they were used as trading posts by the natives and also served to supervise the mining of the salt mines that already existed in the area. Between the beach of es Trenc and that of sa Rapita we find ses Covetes, a rocky area on which a polemical development, has been built. The first houses at ses Covetes were built at the beginning of the last century. Slabs were taken from the sandstone quarries at ses Covetes to built the town walls of Palma.

Beaches.

Es Trenc

The beach of es Trenc is one of the best preserved in the Balearic Islands. 3.5 kilometres long and 59 metres wide, it fine white sand slopes gently down to transparent waters. Since different demonstrations took place during the eighties in defence of this area, es Trenc has become one of the most popular un spoilt spots during the summer months. It is crowded at weekends, especially the area closest to the car park. The nearby roads are signposted to indicate the access point to es Trenc. Vehicles can be left a few metres from the beach in the car park, which is supervised and charged for. On the beach itself, there are several beach bars, rental of beach umbrellas and sunbeds and a first aid post. Nudism is practised on one stretch of the beach.

ses Covetes

The small beach of ses Covetes is located between those of es Trenc and sa Rapita. It is 300 metres long and 40 wide. The sand is fine and white. It is fairly flat and has all the conveniences of a developed beach. It is easy to reach from Campos.
