Port de Soller - Mallorca Island Map 4.3
Port de Soller is the only inlet of significant size in the Serra de Tramuntana. It is therefore the only natural port and the most important harbour between Port d' Andratx and Port de Pollenca. The mountains in which the Soller valley is set are the highest on the island, the highest peak being Puig Major (1,445 m).
Soller is situated in the largest valley in the Serra de Trarnuntana. and the surrounding area is notable for the cultivation of citrus fruits, It is the largest town in the valley, which also includes Port de Soller, Biniaraix and the municipality of Fornalutx. Soller can be reached from Palma, 41 kilometres away, by the only private passenger train existing in Spain today. The Balearic Natural Sciences Museum, the parish church, the baroque convent of Sant Francesc, the Town Hall, and the modernist building that was formerly the Banc de Soller are all worth visiting.
Soller holds its annual patron festival in honour of San Bartolome on 24 August. These are the most important celebrations, although there are other festivities during the rest of the year. On 16 January, bonfires are organised to commemorate the vigil of San Antonio Abad. The celebration known as "La Fira" is held on the second Sunday in May, This is when the traditional fiesta of the Moors and Christians takes place and a battle is simulated. On 29 June Port de Soller organises the festivities to celebrate San Pedro and on 15 July the fiestas of Nuestra Senora del Carmen, On 15 August the patron festival of Biniaraix takes place, and the International Folklore Show is held during the summer.
