Magaluf - Mallorca Island Map 2.9

Magaluf, Mallorca, Spain

When arriving at Magaluf, it is difficult to imagine that, not so many years ago, what is now one of the largest tourist complexes in Majorca was an area of insalubrious waters and undeveloped marshland. Opposite the beach, approximately a mile in length, lies the island of sa Porrassa, where the fleet of Jaume I took refuge before landing at Santa Ponca at the end of 1229.

Unlike Palmanova, situated a few metres away in Magaluf, formerly known as es Magaluf, there are hardly any summer houses. In most cases the vertical buildings have more than ten floors. This tourist resort within the municipality of Calvia has the highest number of night-clubs in the area.

Magaluf is the starting-point for some interesting excursions on foot. The undeveloped areas of Portals Veils and Cala Figuera make excellent destinations, in addition to la Creu de los Montcades at Sant Ponca.

The golondrina boats offer an excellent opportunity to explore the coastline of the municipality of Calvia. There are various options: from the beach at Magaluf, if you walk towards the beach at son Maties and Palmanova, you come to the Marine land dolphinarium; another possibility is to go as far as Cala Fornells. From the beach at Magaluf there are several boats that go to Palma. There is also a glass-bottomed boat that goes to Portals Veils.

Beaches.

Magaluf Beach

The beach, which extends for 920 metres, has been reconditioned in the last few years, which has considerably increased its capacity. Most of the bathers are British tourists, with a smaller proportion of Germans, and young people predominate. There are sunbeds, beach umbrellas and pedalos for hire, hotels, restaurants and boat trips.

Cala Vinyes

This beach is 60 metres long and 12 metres wide, with golden limestone sand. It adjoins the Badia de Palma development and is formed by two small inlets. The hotels are right beside the beach. A small promenade has been built to join the two beaches, which are practically monopolised by tourists from the nearby hotels. It is reached by the winding road out of Magaluf. Access is well indicated.
