Cala Romantica - Mallorca Island Map 11.9
Cala Romantica, (s'Estany d’en Mas) was the first beach to be developed in this area near Portocristo.
Previously it had been a solitary area because of the numerous mosquitoes living in the swampy area at the mouth of Torrent des Morts, which runs down to the same beach and has its source on the side of Puig de sa Bandera (333 m). This is the largest of the group of beaches which also includes Cala Mandia and Cala Aguila. The three are sandy and can be reached by taking a turn off the road linking Portocristo and Portocolom. Although there are many houses, these beaches also have numerous hotels which are packed during the summer months.
Interesting outing can be taken from these beaches to Portocristo, Portocolom or son Macià, a small village halfway between the coast and Manacor. Son Macià, seven kilometres from Manacor, is the llogaret with the most longstanding agricultural traditionl of the municipality. It still conserves old traditions that ceased to be followed years ago.
On the way to Cales de Mallorca, Picot de sa Mola can be seen near son Macià. It was intended to be a large palace, though only the ruins of the project are now visible.
