Portocristo - Mallorca Island Map 11.8
Portocristo lies 13 kilometres from Manacor and is also known as Port de Manacor or Cala Matlacor. It still has the appaerance of a summer resort from the middle of the century, although it has grown considerably over recent years, increasing the number of tourists it can cater for. It is most frequented by tourists visiting Mallorca to see the Cuevas del Drac and Cuevas dels Hams. Cuevas del Drac, 1,700 long, are the largest in Mallorca.
In 1896, the French speleologist Martel explored the interior lake that now bears his name and which can be crossed by boat. It is 177 metres long and has an average width of 40 metres. The lake has a depth of nine metres and has crystal clear waters. Cuevas del Hams Me the third in importance on the island, after Cuevas de Arta, in the municipality of Capdepera. They were explored for the first time in 1905 and were opened to the public many years later. A musical show is performed on the underground lake.
Visitors to Portocristo can also see the Acuario de Mallorca, with 115 displays showing fish from allover the world, from the coral reefs of Australia to the inland rivers of Brazil, pirJnhas or samples of the varied Mediterranean flora and fauna.
Tourist boats leave the port of Portocristo daily for Cala Varques, passing through Cala Anguila, Cala Mendia, s'Estany d'en Mas and Cala Falcó.
