Portocolom - Mallorca Island Map 10.11

Portocolom, Mallorca, Spain

Portocolom is one of the most picturesque spots on the coast of Mallorca. Most of the ancient buildings still standing were built during the second half of the past century, when the port became a compulsory port of call for transporting wine from Felanitx to the boats heading for France.

Over recent years Portocolom has grown considerably and now both modern developments, classic summer houses and fishermen's dwellings all coexist. The oldest buildings are to be found in the Duana area, together with sa Capella and es Riueto. The most modern are in sa Torre, Cal6 d'en Mançal, es Faralló d'en Fred, es Foro ond sa Barbacana. Portocolom is situated eleven miles from Felanitx, the municipal capital.

Before reaching the capital, on the left, there is a path leading to the sanctuary of San Salvador, built on a mountain 509 metres high, the highest in the area. From here there are wonderful view of the coastline of the entire region.

Beaches.

Calo d'en Marcal

This is the largest and easiest beach to reach in the municipal area of Felanitx. (80 x 130m). Cars can be parked just a few metres from the sand and there is a restaurant, bar, sunbeds, beach umbrellas, showers, pedalos and changing huts. Saturated as it is by the tourist-orientated buildings constructed right on the rocks at the sides, local holiday-goers do not choose Calo d'en Marçal (also known as Cala Marçal) for bathing. They prefer other, more sheltered beaches such as s'Arenal.

S'Arenal

Near the lighthouse of sa Punta, in the same port, s'Arenal attracts numerous residents who have a house in Portocolom. The small, beach lacks the typical facilities of developed beaches and is usually fairly crowded. The residents in Felanitx who spend their summers in the area follow a tradition of approaching s'Arenal in their small boats from sa Capella.
