Calas de Mallorca - Mallorca Island Map 10.10
The tourist name Calas de Mallorca has its origin in the year 1962 and comprises the area between es Domingos Petits and Cala Magraner. The development occupies the previous estates - possessions - belonging to s'Espinagar Vell, s'Hospitalet Vell, S'Hospitalet Roig and son losep Nou. Building started in 1963 and three years later it was declared a National Centre of Tourist Interest. Despite the permissiveness of the times, not all the projects materialised and the buildings only reached as far as Cala Antena. The pathways down to the other beaches had already been built and still exist today. This is the reason why many of the virgin beaches on the Manacor coastline have access roads which, if they were not closed, could be used by vehicles. Cala Domingos, which includes Domingos Petits - also known as Cala Tropicana - and es Domingos Crans, next to Cala Antena, are the most built-up.
A short outing can be made from Calas de Mallorca. In s'Hospitalet Vell, for example, there is one of the most important prehistoric sites on Mallorca. The possessió of s'Hospitalet is fortified and has a square defence tower, only visible from the front. The houses in s’Espinagar are another clear example of defensive building. The continuous pirate incursions during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries prevented this area from becoming populated and the few houses built were defensive in design.
