Santa Ponsa - Mallorca Island Map 1.9
Sant Ponsa (Santa Ponca) is, without doubt, the most historic beach in the municipality of Calvia. It is chronicled that on 10 September 1229 King Jaume I landed here. To commemorate that day, upon the 70ath anniversary of the battle in 1929, a cross was erected to los Montcades, two Christian noblemen who died in the first battle against the Saracens. The cross is made of iron and can be found at the end of the Palmanova motorway. The other cross, known as la Creu del Desembarc or la Creu del Rei Iaurne I, made of sandstone, stands at one of the points that encloses the beach, next to the approach to the yacht club.
Both the Sant Ponca Yacht Club, situated at what used to be known as sa Caleta, and the beach form part of one of the most built-up areas of the entire coastline.
The plains, formerly lagoons, which lie behind the three hotels, provide evidence that years ago the sea came in much further than it does now.
Although the Santa Ponca development is one of the largest on the island, the buildings are not too crowded together. There are more summer houses than hotels and apartments. The long, undulating 18-hole golf course, Golf Santa Ponsa, was opened in 1977.
