Porto Cristo, Spain

At the heart of this small resort is a natural harbour crammed with boats of all shapes and sizes. Historically it was a busy fishing town and it still provides great protection against the winter weather, now though mainly pleasure craft use the harbour.

Now it is more famous for the network of spectacular underground caves and lakes – definitely worth a visit if you’re staying in the resort.

Porto Cristo has a good sandy beach, many good restaurants, bars and shops and a real cosmopolitan air about it. So although a little on the quiet side it’s perfect for a relaxing holiday.

Nice sandy beach with crystal clear water. Good facilities, as you would expect, and a good choice of cafe bars for refreshments. If you have a car then drive a short distance South to the Porto Cristo Novo beach which is worth a visit if you enjoy windsurfing or water sports.

Quiet and low key based mainly around eating out then enjoying a nightcap in one of the local bars. Evening strolls along the quayside are popular. The resort is close to Cala Millor if a livelier night takes your fancy.

Who goes there?:

Mainly couples and groups of friends. It's also popular with Spanish tourists too giving the resort a lovely cosmopolitan feel.

Smaller 3*hotels is what you'll find here in the main. Apartments and private rentals are also available.

What to do:

• Boat trips from the harbour to nearby resorts and beaches

• Auto Safari Zoo (courtesy buses leave form the resort)

• Visit the Caves del Drach situated at the resort

• Manacor – the main town of the area and the centre of the man made ‘pearl’ industry. A visit to the factory is a must if you'd like to get your hands on some factory priced jewellery!

In early February the festival of Sa Rau occurs – this is the children’s festival which culminates in a fabulous fancy dress parade that's thoroughly enjoyed by all! In January is the popular celebration of St Antoni which involves the blessing of the animals, lighting of bonfires and special events throughout the week.

Psst! Did you know the underground lake in the Caves del Drach is one of the largest in the world?
