Lluc Monastery - See Map
North East - Escorca, Mallorca

Set within a dramatic landscape high in the Tramontana mountain range is the monastery of Lluc.

Located on a pagan spiritual site this monastery is also said to commemorate the story of a shepherd boy Luke (or Lluc) who found a small statue in the woods and on taking it to a monk the statue began to glow!
Today it is still a place for many religious pilgrims who come, in particular, to see a small statue of the Virgin Mary.

What visitors find here is the large monastery which now contains a hostel. The cells are rented out by the night and they're popular with walkers as Lluc is slap bang in the middle of fabulous walking country.

Also here is a very popular place to eat. The restaurant is set within a wood by a small fresh water lake filled by waterfalls. It's beloved by kids and adults alike who splash about to cool off in high summer.

If you enjoy history then for you there's the original Renaissance-Baroque church built during 1622-84 and designed by Jaume Blanquer. The school grounds behind the church belong to the Los Blauets school choir who've been here since 1531. Los Blauets mean 'the blues' and the name comes from the blue cassocks they wear. They still perform so you may be lucky to hear them when you visit.

Finally there's also a good museum here too that has exhibitions on local handicrafts along with other works of art and archaeological discoveries.

We'd definitely recommend putting this on your 'to do' list as the location is just out of this world. The drive to get there is full of bends and ups and downs on a mountain road but the views are unbelieveable, and, if you're coming from the Soller side then you will pass the Blue Gorge which is well worth a stop.

Opening times for the monastery are: are 9am, 11am, 12.30pm, 5pm and 7pm.

The Botanical Gardens are open from 10am-1pm and 3pm to 6pm daily. Tel: 971 871 525.

La Fonda Restaurant is open from 1-3.30pm Wed-Mon, 7.30-9.30pm Wed-Sun. Tel: 971 517 022.

The Museum is open from 10am-1.30pm, 2.30-5.30pm daily.
